The first time Emmy award-winning journalist Wale Aliyu visited San Diego was in 2010. He says that’s when he first fell in love with the city and vowed to live and work here if he ever got the chance.
In October of 2022, he got that chance and joined the ABC 10News team as an evening anchor next to longtime anchor Kimberly Hunt.
Wale came to America’s Finest City after a long career as an anchor and reporter in multiple cities. Most recently, he anchored and reported at Boston 25 News.
In three years, Wale guided viewers through the COVID 19 pandemic, nightly protests after the murder of George Floyd, and a few deep playoff runs. He also developed several series showcasing the challenges of policing in Massachusetts before and after 2020.
Before Boston Wale worked in America’s largest market at WNBC in the Big Apple. While in New York, he was on the frontlines of breaking news including two helicopter crashes, a fire at Trump Tower, multiple New Year's Eve celebrations, and a run of suspicious packages that turned up throughout the city. Wale also brought viewers extensive coverage of the trial of Mexican drug kingpin, "El Chapo."
Prior to WNBC, Wale spent six years working in Ohio reporting for Cleveland's WKYC-TV and Dayton's WKEF-TV and WRGT-TV. He helped lead his station's coverage of the tragic police-involved shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice and was the first journalist Rice’s mother trusted for an interview. He also reported from the 2016 Republican National Convention. One of Wale's most memorable moments in Cleveland was reporting live following the Cavaliers' 2016 World Championship win, ending the city's 52-year championship drought.
Wale began his career in the same city he grew up in, Columbia, Missouri. He wrote and reported for several news outlets there from radio and tv to digital platforms including Newsy.com.
Wale graduated Cum Laude with a Convergence/Broadcast Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. He goes back to the school yearly to coach prospective college students who want to one day be in his shoes.
When he's not working, Wale enjoys playing basketball, writing and performing poetry, and loves to dance. He is also an avid traveler who has been to 40 of the 50 states and four different continents!
A native of Nigeria, Wale is excited to be in San Diego and root on the Padres with his wife. He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists San Diego chapter.
